I just received a call from this company saying the exact same thing. I told them I wasn't familiar with this account and asked for any information he could tell me. My first thought was 'Identity theft,' and I thought the claim was legitimate. He told me the name of a company and said it was an online loan provider. He knew my social and what bank I dealt with. Use the same rule I do when I get a call like this; I don't answer it, but let it go to voice mail. If I don't recognize the number, I Google it for more information. Once I've done that and determined it's likely a telemarketer and/or some scam, I then delete it. The biggest mistake so many people make is in calling back because we're conditioned to do that, afraid we might miss something important. So, in the future, when you get a call and don't know the number being displayed, let it go to voice mail so you can check it out FIRST, then decide what you want to do after.
